When it comes to self help books there is no lack of options to choose from. They run the gamut from fluffy just believe and pray to the goddess of abundance and you will wake up at a higher frequency to just get out of your own way ok? I think this list encompasses *for the most part* a happy middle ground.
You are probably in one of three camps regarding self help books;
- Self help books are awesome and amazing and I read them all
- I have never read a self help book but they seem pretty cool
- Self help books are a joke. They all say the same thing and are basically just a bunch of cheer-leading fluff with no practical advice.
I used to be in camp three. It wasn’t until I really read them with an open mind and actually started to implement what they recommended that I became a true believer. Now I have officially drunk the Kool-aid. That being said there are definitely good ones and bad ones. I have made a list of the top 10 self help books to help you with your mindset in life, love, and business.
Regardless of how you feel about books that are designed to help you help yourself, I think you will find the following list really helpful. So go ahead and read them and get yourself helped. (in no particular order)
Top 10 self help books to help you get unstuck in life and business
1. You are a Badass: How to stop doubting your greatness and start living an awesome life by Jen Sincero
The moment you have the audacity to start believing in the not yet seen, your reality will begin to shift.
Going out into the world and trying, yet still deep down believing that your ruled by your past circumstances, is like forgiving someone but still hoping they sit in something wet”
Jen Sincero has become my personal favorite. She has a no nonsense take on the self help industry and what it entails. Also she’s pretty funny and totally relatable. (At least I can relate to her.) I suspect there are a lot of people who can say the same thing. I like this book so much I went out and bought it (first read was from the library) and her other book (reviewed below) and I reread it right after I read it the first time! This is one of those oh-so-quotable books that you will read and wonder why you how something so simple can be so powerful. Basically you just need to read this book.
You are a Badass at Making Money by Jen Sincero
This is another great book specifically related to overcoming your issues with money and helping you to achieve your money related dreams. I love the ideas in this book about breaking through your personal blocks when it comes to manifesting money in your life. I will say I don’t necessarily agree with the idea that you should take big leaps of faith and spend $85000 on a life coach if it is going to leave your family destitute. But I’m all for the basic idea that you should take a leap of faith and believe that you can manifest wealth into your life (in a responsible way). In other words reign the crazy in but definitely push past your limits of belief.
Think and Grow rich by Napoleon Hill
I mean if you haven’t heard of this book I don’t know where you have been. Antarctica? The Moon? If you are a complete newbie to this whole genre then I will cut you some slack I guess. Napoleon’s advice in this book was inspired by Andrew Carnegie, who was obviously a very successful guy. (look him up if you don’t know who he is). This is a great book for breaking it all down into simple easy-to-follow instructions that you can start to implement now! I recommend buying this one so you can highlight and go back and reread and then go back and reread again. Its totally worth it.
What to Say When You Talk to Yourself by Shad Helmstetter
Queue the kumbaya. Just kidding! This is actually a really awesome book. It made my list of awesome self help books did it not? If you want to talk affirmations then Shad is your guy. The nerd in me who loves going to book readings and fan-girling over authors loved meeting Shad. He was such a soft spoken well mannered guy. The book is a goldmine of information about how to talk to yourself and change your thinking. I bet you don’t even realize how very mean you are to yourself! Most people don’t look in a mirror and say “oh hey there gorgeous. You are looking so on point today and that hair! Whoa! magazine worthy. And have I mentioned how incredibly smart and capable you are”. But I mean, you should do just that! Maybe using different words but you get the picture. Just read this book. You will thank me. And Shad of course. You’ll thank him too.
Psycho cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz
Oldey but goody. Psycho cybernetics sounds scary and technical and not appealing at all(!) but it’s actually filled with amazing and practical advice. According to Maxwell the term means “steering your mind to a productive, useful goal so you can reach the greatest port in the world, peace of mind”. The original 1960 version holds as true now as it did then. Maxwell really digs down into the nitty-gritty and explains a lot about how the mind works and why visualization works. I will warn you that this book isn’t much of a page turner (you know what I mean). It takes some will power of your own to get through it in a timely manner. But if you want to understand why its important to live your life as if you are already successful and happy then pick this one up.
The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck By Mark Manson
The key to a good life is not giving a fuck about more; its giving a fuck about less, giving a fuck about only what is true and immediate and important”
Just the title alone was enough to make me and my potty mouth want to pick it up and read it. This is another book that spoke to my black soul. Its not about being positive about shitty things its about learning to deal the with the shitty things and the unfairness of life and still finding happiness and positivity. Because you know what? Not everything is all candy coated and sweet all the time. Sometimes life sucks. Its about learning to deal with the suckiness and not letting it bring you down. The struggle is real and its from that struggle that we find success.
Girl, wash your face: Stop believing the lies about who you are so you can become who you were meant to be by Rachel Hollis
I loved this book. Rachel Hollis just seems so damn relatable and like someone I would totally go out for a coffee with. Each chapter of this book starts with a ‘lie’ that she once told herself and then how she overcame it. We all lie to ourselves and often those lies do nothing but hurt us and keep us down. This book is full of advice to help with that. Definitely an awesome read!
How to win Friends and Influence People
Another classic alert! This one isn’t of the ‘this is how you make money’ variety. Its more of how to get along with people variety. If you own a business there comes a time when you will need to interact with other people. Despite being written 80 years ago it is still relevant today and has some really great advice. Boiled down it’s just advice on how and why to be nice to people. Worth a read.
As a Man Thinketh By James Allen
As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he”
This is essentially the archaic version of whether you think you can or think you can’t, You’re right. This book is another classic that deals with your belief in yourself and how it can take you to great heights or leave you in the dust. It’s all about your mindset dude. Live it, love it, learn it. Also read it.
The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins
The 5 second rule is probably the most simple yet effective ‘self-help’ rule I have ever encountered. You literally countdown from 5 and push yourself into action. Obviously this will only work if you actually do it (like anything in the self help world). Its so simple and yet so incredibly powerful if you implement it into your life. Its essentially about not overthinking things and listening to your intuition. The book itself could have been way shorter as most of it’s taken up by case studies, (ie tweets and emails) from people who have found success from using the 5 second rule in their own lives. The nuts and bolts of the rule are in there though and it’s an extremely fast read if you breeze over all the self cheer-leading (which is what I did). Unless you like the reading about success stories then go for it.
Those are my recommendations for a total mind overhaul. Let’s be real for a minute though. It’s all great and good and wonderful to read these book and everything but the real magic happens when you sit down and actually DO WHAT THEY SAY. They are called SELF-HELP books for a reason. (I learned this the hard way.) I hope that this list gives you a reading foundation to go out and kick some ass.
